Left-hand

1. Why R1200GS
Rallye? Why BMW? |
Well , I am
riding bikes all my life and always had
a number of bikes , Honda , Yamaha , KTM
, Moto Guzzi , Ducati.
In 1987
I decided
to travel the world on a motorbike and
then I chose to buy the most reliable
bike for a journey like this and my
choice was a BMW R80GS.
I travelled
for 18 months on the BMW R80GS and the
bike turned out to be very reliable and
finally brought me safely home again.

|
2. Own any
R1200GS or R1150GS before? |
Yes , I had
a R80GS , R1100GS , R1150GS , R1200GS
and now i bought the R1200GS Rallye.
For 25
years I always kept at least one BMW GS
and replaced it from time to time with a
newer version .
Last year I wanted to
replace my present bike with a 30 years
anniversary model but it was not
possible to get one so I decided to
order the R1200GS Rallye which is very
similar .
I wanted to have one more
air-cooled boxer model and as far as I
understand the new water-cooled model
may be introduced in 2013 so it was time
to replace my present model . |
|
3. Riding
experience? |
I am riding
big bikes since 1981 , therefore 31
years . I bought my first big bike in
1981 , a Moto Guzzi Le mans which I
still keep until today . |
|
4. Previous owned bikes? |
I used to have
3-4 Guzzis at a time , some of them very
old ones . I also had a KTM 600GS as
well as a Ducati 851 superbike . |
|
5. Where do you
come from? and how many years living in
HK? |
I am a
Swiss national and I arrived in HK in
1990 and import my first BMW from
Switzerland in 1994 |
|
6. What do you
think about HK's driving environment, is
it friendly for bikers? |
Well , for
Asia its not too bad . when I arrived 22
years ago there were almost no big bikes
on the road , just a few harleys.
Nowadays there are so many around and
car drivers are used to us . I consider
it safe and never had an accident here
in HK since I started riding in 1994 , I
have clocked up more then 200'000 km on
HK roads so far . The only complain I
have is that HK is driving on the wrong
side of the road.........
I ride my
bike everyday to work so my bike looks
it and I dont have time to clean it , in
addition , i park it outside so the
weather takes its toll , but again ,
bikes are made to be used and not to be
cleaned all the time !

|
7. Any
modifications plan for the Rallye? |
Not really
, I will mount a lightweight exhaust
which hopefully makes a bit more noise
and the 3 boxes I already own . I see a
lot of GS riding around with heavy
armour like GS Adventure type stuff but
as long as you don't really travel it
just adds weight and the handling is not
as good. The bike should stay as light
as possible in order to move around
quickly . |
|
8. Any advice
for novice biker dealing with big bike? |
Well , many
novice bikers think they should have a
250cc or even smaller to start with . My
point is that I believe that bigger
bikes are more safe , so its not a
matter of cc .
My advise for new bikers
is to have at least 600cc , maybe just a
2 cylinder which creates torque rather
then power and of course a bike with ABS
!
But even a R1200R would be a good and
safe bike to start with, or a Ducati
monster ? |
