17-year-old
Katherine Prumm has been winning motocross races for a number of
years now. The young Kawasaki rider from Auckland is already the
Australian and New Zealand women's champion, but her recent
international achievements have made the world sit up and take
notice. A 2-1 result at the opening round of the 2006
Women's World Motocross Championship in Teutschenthal, Germany
on May 7 earned her the overall victory and puts her at the head
of the championship points race, tied with rival Livia Lancelot. |
The following weekend (on May 13), the
Kawasaki ace stunned the established stars with back-to-back
wins at the opening round of the U.S. Women's Motocross
Championships at Glen Helen, California. Prumm's dominance is
underscored by the fact that the next best rider in the
competitive class, No.4-ranked American Sarah Whitmore, finished
3-5.
Prumm, who hopes to earn an American
contract for next year, plans to participate in one more round
of the 6-round U.S. series. After competing at Hangtown,
California on May 20, she will head home on May 23 to train for
the second and final round of the women's world championship,
being held July 1-2 at Udevalla, Sweden (where, incidentally,
she was runner-up in last year's one-round inaugural event).
